Frank Gehry

Frank Gehry is bullshit. His buildings (with the exception of one) do not have any connection between their form and function, which I see as the highest calling in architecture. One should be invited in, made curious to know what is inside, given a clue as to what activity occurir a dentro. The most beautiful buildings in NY provoke thoughts of big business and commerce, and their height a statement of the importance of the city that they reside. The one exception? Gehry's theatre on the Bard campus. As you approach you get glimpses of the shiny hedgehog-like structure, and it reveals itself to you slowly, until you are upon it, where it strikes you with its size and shape. The silver-grey paneling converses with the color of the sky, whether it is brght blue or slate grey. And it looks like a theatre! In contrast, the Disney Theatre in downtown LA explodes onto the the street, incongrous to everything around it, its silver sheathing shiny and discombobulated. Why should buildings be curvy? Its fun and new, but it is bullshit. Lastly, he is designing the Atlantic Yards in Brooklyn, which no matter what the architecture is destroying the unique, small scale, villagy feel of the borough I love. And Gehry's disastrous designs only heighten the effect. Bullshit!

I like Franky Gehry. He pushes the boundaries of how space is conceived.
Not everything has to be utilitarian. Beauty and aesthetics can sometimes trump common value if it enhances our sense of reality. The design of "Blade Runner" overshadows the performances, but it's still a classic.
